Full Rights Update (3/6/26): Introducing Trivia Questions of the Week, LWVDC Appreciates Student Videographers, Taking Action, and D.C. Students Walk Out to Protest ICE
Trivia Question of the Week:
Who said the following about voting representation for D.C. residents: “The demands of history in favor of representation for the Americans living in Washington, D.C. is compelling. In establishing the republic, the single overarching principle of the American founding was that laws should be based upon the consent of the governed. The first generation of Americans threw tea in Boston harbor because they were denied a voting representative in the national legislature in England. Given their fealty to representative democracy, it is inconceivable to me that our Founders would have been willing to accept the denial of representation to so great a throng of Americans in perpetuity.”

D.C. League of Women Voters Appreciates Student Videographers
During LWVDC’s recent Lunch & Learn about D.C. Statehood, our full house enjoyed screening the documentary created by Everett Goldstein and Siddarth Kravetz for the C-SPAN StudentCam Contest. Goldstein and Kravetz are students at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C. C-SPAN’s theme for its 2026 StudentCam documentary competition is “America’s 250th Anniversary; Exploring the American Story through the Declaration of Independence.” The students chose to focus their documentary on D.C. Statehood. Everett Goldstein was able to join the meeting, spoke about how they developed the film, titled “Washington, DC: America’s Last Colony,” and accepted certificates of appreciation for their work from Anne Anderson, Chair of the Committee for Full Rights for D.C. Citizens. (Please note the 51-star flag!)

Young People in D.C. Walked Out to Protest ICE
On Friday, high school students from 14 D.C. public high schools walked out from 2:30-4:30pm. From a student reporter: “The purpose of the walkout was to build continuing momentum in the fight against wrongful deportations, discrimination, and violence by ICE officials; also to empower students and show them that we do have voices to make change.” Approximately 750-1000 people were there. (Coincidentally, Friday, February 27th, was the 225th anniversary of D.C.’s disenfranchisement with the passage of the Organic Act of 1801.)
Trivia Answer: Mike Pence (April 19, 2007) (He does not necessarily support D.C. Statehood.)

This 6 1/2 minute video is really informative! What a great way to share the need for DC statehood with friends and family.
I want to highlight the excellent work of our high school students in making this video. They interviewed me for about 45 minutes and had to choose which parts of our discussion to use. Then, they had to figure out all the rest of this very short video to make their case. Congratulations and thank you to Everett and Siddarth!
